CARTER ALAN’s U2: THE ROAD TO POP
WZLX Assistant Program Diector and deejay (and former WBCN jock) Carter Alan wrote one of the definitive U2 biographies in 1992. Entitled U2: Outside is America and published by Faber & Faber in the United States, the book went on to sell out of six printings and 23,000 copies. A further 22,000 copies sold overseas. Published by Boxtree in Britain, Australia and New Zealand, the book was re-titled U2: Wide Awake in America. In Holland the book became U2 on Tour. A hardcover edition hit the streets in Japan.
By 1995, U2 fans began to complain that the book was impossible to find. The work had fallen out of print and all remaining copies snatched up. Demand has continued to be so high that Faber & Faber has issued an expanded edition re-titled U2: The Road to Pop. Revamped and containing fresh cover art, new chapters and an updated discography and videography, the book is a must for all U2 fans.
The book is the most candid, frank and information-laden book out about the Irish supergroup. Loaded with conversations and experiences from Carter Alan’s many interviews and encounters with U2, the book offers a unique picture of one of rock’s most creative groups. U2 fans worldwide have made it an essential part of their libraries and critical support from the media has been unanimous from the beginning.
- "Alan’s interviews with U2 are among the best they’ve ever given…" Alternative Press
- "…an exhilarating ride. Alan’s book is more than a valuable U2 archive. It has a ring of truth that mirrors the band’s own inspired amateurism." The Boston Globe
- "…an illuminating story." Billboard
- "…an inside-track fan’s diary…neatly catalogues details surrounding the rise of the group…" Tampa Tribune
